Lucas Skyler is the jerk you like. Elfin grin, teal baseball cap and carefully-curated bedhead is his signature look. A rising YouTube star, he’s charming, energetic, self-deprecating—and dead.
Twelve months after his suicide, fans celebrate at an over-the-top One Year Memorial. Set in an art gallery overlooking the NYC skyline, the event is a hot social ticket, ripe with high-profile hype. To honor the web legend’s life, the gallery is filled with social media artifacts: Lucas Instagram pranks, TikTok sketches, an Uber-Dashcam video medley, all presented like historical treasures. There’s even a glass case featuring “The Lucas Backpack,” its waterlogged contents carefully displayed and labelled, retrieved from the depths of the Hudson River.
Drinks are served, influencers groove, a violinist serenades. Fitness trainer / wanna-be celeb Colter Dodd is the event’s impresario: wielding his mic like a baton, flaunting time spent with Lucas, he turns his hero’s death into a personal springboard. Most fans applaud—but one guest is distressed by the unabashed self-promotion. Watching from the edge of the crowd, former Lucas gf and well-known TikTok Queen Lulu Rae finds the whole thing irreverent: these people are worshipping an online persona, not the real person. And they sure aren’t asking why he died.
Despite urgent texts from her manager, Lulu doesn’t post the expected selfies…and when she discovers artist Maya Tenerife at the party (another former Lucas gf, pre-fame), they share their dismay. Worlds apart on the surface—cat-eye make-up and platinum curls vs. anime phone case and thrifted jeans—the pair decide to team up, to redeem their late boyfriend’s identity by sharing a video he never posted. However…
In the midst of their ‘big reveal,’ Lucas returns from the dead by live-streaming the crowd. Is this for clout or for real? Lucas is uncertain himself.
